Overview

Stargate is a cross-chain liquidity transfer protocol built on LayerZero that moves assets such as stablecoins and ETH between supported blockchains. Its primary value is settling transfers from shared liquidity pools on the destination chain, so users receive the destination chain's version of the asset instead of a wrapped token.

Stargate launched in 2022 as the first major application built on LayerZero messaging. The first version used unified liquidity pools to settle transfers in a single transaction. Stargate V2 runs on LayerZero V2 and adds two transfer modes, Taxi and Bus, a credit-based pool accounting system, and support for issuers who deploy tokens as Omnichain Fungible Tokens (OFTs). The protocol was originally governed through the STG token and vote-escrowed STG (veSTG). The Stargate community later approved an acquisition by the LayerZero Foundation covering the protocol, token, and DAO. Under the official redemption terms, STG converts to ZRO at a fixed ratio of 1 STG to 0.08634 ZRO. Redeemed STG is permanently destroyed, and STG is being phased out. Third-party sources have reported more than 55 million messages and over $70 billion in cumulative transfer volume.

Performance

Taxi mode sends each transfer individually for speed, while Bus mode batches transfers to reduce cost. Actual timing and fees vary by route and network.

Web

The web interface at stargate.finance connects to supported wallets. Developers can integrate through LayerZero and Stargate documentation and contracts.
