Overview
Base is a Coinbase-incubated Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) blockchain protocol launched in August 2023, engineered to deliver fast, low-cost, and secure onchain transactions. Its primary value is enabling developers, creators, and everyday users to access decentralized applications, DeFi, payments, and social tools without the prohibitive gas fees and slow throughput of Ethereum mainnet.
Base was developed by Coinbase — the largest publicly traded U.S. cryptocurrency exchange — and built on Optimism's OP Stack, an open-source framework for constructing Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 networks. Jesse Pollak, Base's creator and Head of Protocols at Coinbase, described it as combining the best of Ethereum's security with Coinbase's institutional expertise. The network launched its testnet in February 2023, followed by a developer preview in July 2023, and a full public mainnet debut through the "Onchain Summer" event on August 9, 2023. In early 2025, Base announced a strategic architectural evolution: transitioning from the shared OP Stack to a proprietary, in-house integrated technology stack, signaling growing technological independence.

Processes transactions at significantly higher throughput and near-zero fees compared to Ethereum Layer 1 mainnet.
