Overview
Maple Finance is an onchain credit marketplace that connects institutional borrowers with stablecoin lenders through professionally managed pools. Its core value is bringing traditional private-credit lending onchain, letting lenders earn yield from real loan interest while borrowers access capital without conventional banking intermediaries.
Founded in 2019 and launched in 2021, Maple was built by a team with backgrounds in traditional finance and credit markets, including co-founders Sidney Powell and Joe Flanagan. The protocol originally focused on undercollateralized lending to reputable trading firms, an approach uncommon in a DeFi sector dominated by overcollateralized loans. After a notable default event in 2022 involving borrower Orthogonal Trading, Maple restructured its underwriting framework and expanded into overcollateralized and real-world-asset lending, rebranding around its current SYRUP token and syrup-prefixed product line.
