How We Calculate Utility Score
Our Utility Score is calculated based on a weighted analysis of Platform Functionality, User Experience (UX), Ecosystem Integration, and Active Usage. We evaluate the practical value of the tools, feature availability, cross-chain support, and real-world adoption metrics across the Web3 ecosystem.
Note: Utility scores are dynamic and update as apps release new features or add network support. Users should evaluate features based on their own use cases.

Overview
Arbitrum is Ethereum's leading Layer-2 scaling protocol, developed by Offchain Labs, that uses Optimistic Rollup technology to dramatically reduce gas fees and increase transaction throughput while fully inheriting Ethereum's security guarantees. As the #1 L2 network by Total Value Locked — exceeding $17 billion as of 2025 — Arbitrum serves as critical infrastructure for DeFi, institutional finance, gaming, and real-world asset tokenization.
Launched publicly on August 31, 2021, Arbitrum was created by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner through Offchain Labs, a company founded in 2018 with a singular focus on Ethereum scalability. The protocol matured rapidly: the Nitro upgrade in August 2022 supercharged throughput and compressed fees further, and in March 2023, the ARB governance token was introduced via a landmark airdrop to over 600,000 addresses, transitioning protocol control to the ArbitrumDAO community. By 2025, the ecosystem had surpassed 1,000 active projects, 100+ live or in-development Orbit chains, and 2.1 billion cumulative transactions processed.
Secure
Inherits full Ethereum L1 security via Optimistic Rollup; fraud proofs enforced from day one with zero successful exploits since 2021 launch.
Performance
Processes thousands of TPS using Nitro's advanced calldata compression; 2.1 billion cumulative transactions with sub-cent average fees achieved.
