Overview
World Chain is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain protocol developed by the World ecosystem, engineered to serve as universal financial and identity infrastructure for verified human users. Its primary value lies in combining on-chain sybil resistance — powered by World ID biometric verification — with scalable, low-cost transactions to create a network where real humans are provably prioritized over bots and automated agents.
Launched as part of the broader World project (formerly Worldcoin), World Chain was built by Tools for Humanity (TFH), a San Francisco-based company founded in 2019. The protocol is governed by the World Foundation, a Cayman Islands-based non-profit entity, and is open source, permissionless, and designed to be progressively decentralized. The native token, WLD, launched on July 24, 2023, and the chain operates as part of the Optimism Superchain stack, inheriting Ethereum's security guarantees.
