Overview
NEAR Protocol is a sharded layer-1 blockchain that acts as the settlement layer for a wider stack covering cross-chain execution, private AI inference, and onchain governance. Its primary value is giving users and software agents one account to transact across many blockchains while keeping execution and data confidential.
NEAR was co-founded by Illia Polosukhin, a co-author of the 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need", which introduced the Transformer architecture. According to near.org, the protocol is a proof-of-stake network that has run on mainnet for over five years with 100% uptime. The site also reports 600 ms block times, 1.2 second finality, and capacity above 1 million transactions per second. The ecosystem is split into several products: near.com (a trading interface), NEAR Intents (a cross-chain execution layer), NEAR AI (private inference and the IronClaw agent harness), and House of Stake (stake-based governance, live on mainnet). The project reports a fully unlocked token supply, with protocol revenue directed to NEAR buybacks. Integrations listed on the site include Ledger, Brave, Venice AI, Zodl, Abound, and the Government of Bermuda.
